왜 인간은 수행을 해야 하는가? Why must we meditate?

왜 인간은 수행을 해야 하는가? 수행이란 무엇인가? 궁극의 참된 수행은 무엇인가? 이것은 ‘인간은 왜 태어나며 왜 사는가’하는 질문과 연관되어 있습니다. 

Why must we meditate? What is meditation? What is the true meditation? This is related to the question, “Why do we live?” 

왜 수행을 해야 되는가에 대해 그 핵심 이유를 잠시 살펴볼까요?

Shall we take a look at the main reason why we must meditate?

첫째, 모든 인간은 궁극의 깨달음을 얻기 위해서 존재합니다. 수행을 통한 영적 성숙 을 위해서 인간으로 태어나고 존재합니다.  

First, all humans exist for the attainment of ultimate enlightenment. Human beings are born and exist for spi- ritual maturation through meditation.

둘째, 영원한 생명을 얻기 위해 수행합니 다. 이에 대한 결정적인 해답을 주는 말씀이 있습니다. 참동학 증산도의 가르침입니다.

Second, meditation is practiced to gain everlasting life. There is a phrase that gives a conclusive answer to this question. It is a teaching of Jeung San Do, the true Eastern Learning. 

“도( 道 )를 잘 닦는 자는 그 정혼( 精魂 )이 굳 게 뭉쳐서 죽어서 천상에 올라가 영원히 흩 어지지 아니하나 도를 닦지 않는 자는 정혼 이 흩어져서 연기와 같이 사라지느니라.” (도전 9:76)

“When one devotedly cultivates and purifies them- selves with dao, their essence and soul become densely con- centrated, so upon their death, their soul ascends to heaven and never disperses. However, when one does not cultivate and pu- rify themselves with dao, their soul eventually dissipates into nothingness like mere smoke.” (English Dojeon 9:33:1~2) 

셋째, 지금 인류는 천지의 계절이 바뀌는 ‘개벽기’에 살고 있기 때문입니다. 다시 말 해 거대한 변혁기에 살아남기 위해 수행을 해야 합니다. 이 개벽이라는 말을 기억하셔 야 합니다.

Third, we must meditate because humanity is living at the time of gaebyeok (the great opening of heaven and earth) when the season of heaven and earth changes. In other words, meditation must be practiced to survive dur- ing this time of great change. You must remember this word gaebyeok . 

그러면 수행이란 무엇일까요?

Then, what is meditation? 

동방 한자문화권에서 수행이란 ‘닦을 수 修 자, 행할 행 行 자’로 나의 몸과 마음의 움직 임을 닦는다는 뜻입니다. 나의 본래 참마음, 즉 본성(Nature)을 회복하고, 육신의 죽음을 넘어 나의 생명을 불멸의 영신으로 만드는 일입니다.

In the East where Chinese characters are used, the word for meditation is suhaeng . Su means “to cultivate” and haeng means “to practice, take action, or do something.” So it means to cultivate the movement of the body and mind. It is the act of recovering your original and true mind--your nature--and transcending the death of the physical body to become an immortal spiritual being.

meditation이라는 말의 어원은 세 가지 뜻이 있습니다. “Medi” : ① to measure(측정하다) ② to contemplate(명상하다) ③ to heal(치유 하다)

In the English word ‘meditation,’ there are three meanings to the root “medi.” 1. to measure 2. to con- template 3. to heal 

그래서 인도의 한 구루는 meditation(수 행)은 궁극의 medicine(약)이라 했습니다. 

This is why one Indian guru said “Meditation is the ul-timate medicine.” 

결론적으로 수행이란 내 생명의 정혼을 굳 게 뭉치는 것입니다. 이것은 자신의 본래의 참마음의 문을 활짝 여는, 성스럽고 아름다 운 과업입니다. (계속)
