Meditation Cultivates the Mind 

어드러헌 문화권을 신앙하든지 간에, 수 련이란 자기가 자기 심법 心法 을 연마하는 것 이다.

Whatever religion or teaching people may practice, meditation is a means of cultivating their minds. 

상제님의 공사 내용을 보면, 어떤 한 노처 녀가 도통하고 싶어서 수도하는 이웃사람을 찾아갔는데, 마침 그 부부가 싸움을 하고 있 었다. 그들에게 주문이 뭐냐고 물으니까, 그 노부부가 귀찮아서 “아무 것도 싫다.”고 대답한다.

During His work of renewal, Sangjenim once spoke of a spinster who wanted to attain enlightenment. She visited a neighborhood couple who were medi- tators, but the couple were quarreling, so when she asked for a mantra, the annoyed husband only replied, “I don’t like anything.”

그 소리를 듣고 그 처녀는 만날 ‘아 무 것도 싫다. 아무 것도 싫다’하고 일심으로 외우고 다녔다. 아, 그러니 식구들이 오죽이 나 싫어했겠나.

Mistaking this for a mantra, the spinster from that day onward kept chanting with one mind, “I don’t like any- thing, I don’t like anything … .” Imagine how annoyed her family must have been!

하루는 처녀가 물동이를 이고 오는데, 그 아버지가 밉다고 도리깨로 물동이를 후려쳐 버렸다. 해서 돌 위에 넘어졌는데, 동이도 성 하고 물도 쏟아지지 않았다. 

Eventually, one day as the spinster carried a large jar of water on her head, chanting, “I don’t like anything, I don’t like anything,” her father grew exasperated and struck the jar from her head with a flail. The falling jar struck a rock, yet it did not break and no water was lost. 

한마디로 얘기해서, 이게 다 일심 一心 을 강조하신 것이다. 어드러헌 곳에서 성신감 화니 뭐니 그런 소릴 해도 그것이 진리 때문 만은 아니다. 진리 이전에 일심이 있다. 또 참선이라 하든 수도라 하든 수련이라고 하든, 뭐라고 명명하든지 간에 그것도 다 일심 을 강조하는 것이다. 오직 일심으로써만 참의 경지에 들어갈 수 있다.　

Sangjenim told this story to stress the importance of having one mind. The divine inspiration that so many people speak of (and all things related to it) does not stem solely from truth, for before truth there is one mind. Zen, meditation, contemplation ? all practices, whatever their name, emphasize one mind. Only through one mind can one enter the realm of truth.

수도하는 사람은 첫째 심법이 발라야 한 다. 공부하려고 앉은 사람이 ‘내가 공부해서 뭘 어떻게 하겠다.’하는 그런 나쁜 생각이나 한다면 숫제 처음부터 시작하지 않는 게 낫다. 수도라는 걸 잘못하면 귀신한테 홀려서 살살 꾀어내면 그냥 넘어가 버리는 것이다. 그러면 공부 안한 턱도 안 되는 것 아닌가.

Those who meditate should have a right mind. You would be better not to start at all if you will pursue medi- tation with bad motives. If meditators do not practice meditation correctly, they can easily become seduced by spirits. Is this not worse than not meditating at all?
