The Process of Spiritual Awakening

개안이라 함은 신명세계를 보는 걸 말한 다. 개안이 되면 신명을 본다. 개안이라 하는 것이 도통하는 첫 관문이다.

“Spiritual awakening,” or “opening the spiritual eye,” signifies the ability to see the world of spirits. This spiritual awakening is the first step toward enlightenment.  

허면 개안되는 과정이 어떠냐? 아주 일심 으로 앉아서 주문을 읽을 것 같으면 먼저 자 기도취가 된다. 앉아서 한 마음 한 뜻, 일심 정성을 갖고 주문을 읽다 보면 저도 모르게 모든 걸 다 잊어버린다. 옛날 사람들은 그걸 학술용어로 ‘망형망재 忘形忘在 ’라고 표현했 다. 망형망재란 형상도 잊어버리고 자기 존 재도 잊어버리는 걸 말한다. 즉 이 세상에 내 몸뚱이가 있는지 없는지, 내 존재 자체를 망 각해 버리는 것이다.

What is the process of this spiritual awakening? When you sit and chant mantras with one mind, you will first experience entrancement. What this means is that when you are sitting with one mind and one aim ? when you are chanting the mantras with utmost sincerity ? you will naturally forget about everything. People in the ancient past described this with a scholarly phrase, “forgetting shape, forgetting existence ( 忘形忘在 ).” In other words, you will become oblivious of your body ? of your very existence. 

헌데 이제 제군들도 앉아서 수련을 해보면 알겠지만, 거기까지 가는 과정에서, 왜 그런 지 쓸데없는 생각이 자꾸 난다. 잡념을 버려 야 하는 것이 원칙인데, 잡념을 버리기는커 녕 엄마 젖 먹을 때 생각까지 다 나는 것이다. 평상시에는 잊어버렸던 게 정신이 말쑥해져 서 더 많이 생각나는 것이다. 열 배 스무 배더 난다. 그러다 차차 시간이 지나면 그런 게 없어진다. 그게 마치 뭐와 같으냐 하면, 물 한 동이 떠다가 하루고 이틀이고 놔두면 물 찌꺼기는 가라앉고 맑은 물만 남는 거와 같 다.

My students, as you will know from your own medi- tation, many random thoughts surface during the process of meditation. These thoughts must be abandoned. Yet, during meditation, you remember everything, even the times when you suckled at your mother’s breast. As your mind becomes more and more lucid, you will continually remember forgotten memories ? ten times, twenty times more than usual. But as time passes during meditation, these memories will gradually subside. This may be com- pared to a bucketful of water: if you leave it for one or two days, all the dregs settle to the bottom, leaving behind clear water.

그것과 같이, 수도할 때는 세속적인 혼탁 한 생각이 다 가라앉아야 한다. 그런 게 물 찌 꺼기 가라앉듯이 다 없어져야 한단 말이다.

Similarly, when you pour water into a bowl, the water eventually becomes clear as its impurities sink to the bottom. Just like this, when you meditate, all your worldly, murky thoughts subside. Like dregs settling in water, these thoughts must subside within your mind.
