이 문장에서 characterized는 동사 ‘characterize(특징짓다)’의 과거분사로 명사 era를 뒤에서 수식하고 있는 형태입니다. 일반적으로 한 개의 단어로 된 단일한 현재 또는 과거분사는 명사 앞에 쓰지만, 분사가 목적어, 보어, 부사 등을 끌고 올 때는 명사 뒤에 위치하며 수식을 합니다. 이 경우 ‘관계대명사 + be’가 생략된 것으로도 볼 수 있습니다.

1주에서 배웠던 ‘관계부사 when’입니다. 복습해 보면, 관계부사란 “접속사” + “부사”의 기능을 하면서 두 문장을 이어주는 역할을 합니다.

원래 이렇게 두 문장이었는데 겹치는 부분(the time)을 생략하고 시간을 나타내는 관계부사 when으로 연결해 주었다고 보시면 됩니다.
