Elements of Jeung San Do’s Meditation

1. offer a water bowl : 청수를 올리다

Usually one would offer water bowls on their personal altars at home.

대개 가정 신단에 청수를 모십니다.

He offered a water bowl and prayed fervently, and his wife soon recovered.

그가 청수를 모시고 지성으로 기도하자 그의 아내가 곧 회복했다.

Offer water bowls with utmost devotion, and you will be completely cured.

지극한 정성으로 청수를 올리면 병이 깨끗이 나을 것입니다.

2. the correct and proper way to : ~하는 올바른 방법

The embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth bow is the correct and proper way to revere heaven and earth.

반천무지는 천지를 참되게 받드는 예법입니다.

The correct and proper way to meditate is to still your mind and focus on simply being, instead of doing.

명상을 하는 올바른 방법은 마음을 고요히 하고 “행위”보다 “존재”에 집중하는 것입니다.

The correct and proper way to chant a mantra is to preserve a right mind and chant it with sincerity, awakenedness, and faithfulness.

주문을 읽는 올바른 방법은 바른 마음을 갖고 성경신을 다해 읽는 것입니다.

3. serve as a medium : 중계 역할을 하다

Water serves as a medium that links you with Sangjenim.

물은 상제님과 당신을 이어 주는 중계 역할을 합니다.

Salt served as a medium of exchange.

소금은 교환 매개물로 쓰였다.

Shamans serve as a medium between human world and the spirit world.

샤먼은 인간 세계와 신명 세계 간의 중개자 역할을 한다.

4. Is it a must to : 반드시 ~해야 하나요?

Is it a must to offer water before chanting?

주문을 읽기 전에 꼭 청수를 올려야 하나요?

Is it a must to pray before a meal?

식사 전에 꼭 기도를 해야 하나요?

Is it a must to kneel when meditating?

수행을 할 때 반드시 무릎을 꿇어야 하나요?

Dialogue 1

A: What are the some of the basic rules that must be followed in Jeung San Do meditation?

B: Usually one would offer water bowls once in the morning and once in the evening on their personal altars at home. Then they offer the embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth bow four times and a personal prayer. Then they chant the mantras.

A: Embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth bow?

B: Yes. The embracing-heaven-and-caressing-earth bow is the correct and proper way to revere heaven and earth. It signifies the uniting of the virtues of heaven, earth, and humanity into one.

A: 증산도 수행 예법에 대해 알려 주시겠습니까?

B: 보통 아침저녁으로 한 번씩 가정 신단에 청수를 모십니다. 그런 다음 반천무지 사배를 올리고 기도한 후 주문을 읽습니다.

A: 반천무지요?

B: 네. 반천무지는 천지를 참되게 받드는 예법입니다. 하늘과 땅과 사람이 합덕한다는 의미가 담겨 있죠.

B: Water signifies cleansing, purity, and the fount of life. And also, water serves as a medium that links you with Sangjenim during your prayer and meditation.

A: Is it a must to offer water before chanting?

B: It really depends on the circumstance you’re in. For example, when we chant mantras in a whisper or in our mind while driving, walking, or performing housework, we usually do not offer water.

A: 신단 위에 물을 올려놓고 주문을 읽는 이유는 무엇입니까?

B: 청수는 생명의 근원, 정화, 순수·맑음의 상징입니다. 청수는 우리가 수행과 기도 시에 상제님과 나를 이어주는 중계 역할을 한다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

A: 꼭 청수를 올리고 주문을 읽어야 하나요?

B: 상황에 따라서 다릅니다. 운전 중에, 걸어 다닐 때, 집안일을 하며 작은 소리를 내어 혹은 마음속으로 주문을 읽을 경우엔 청수를 올리지 않습니다.
