1. I would like to~ (I'd like to~) : ~하고 싶어요

(☞ ‘하고 싶다, 원한다’는 말을 할 때 우리는 종종 want to를 사용하죠. 그런데 처음 보는 사람, 회의석상, 고객/점원 등을 대할 때, 자기보다 나이 많거나 지위가 높은 사람에게 말할 때는 would like to가 더 좋습니다. want를 사용하면 “나는 ~을 원한다,” “꼭 해야겠다”는 의미가 강해서 상대방이 기분 나빠 할 수도 있기 때문입니다. want to는 “~을 원한다(~을 해야 한다)”는 좀 더 직설적인 표현이고, would like to는 “~ 하고 싶다”는 좀 더 완곡하고 친절한 표현입니다.)

명상 수행 방법을 당신에게 보여 드리고 싶습니다.

2. so that : “~하기 위해서” 또는 “그 결과 ~하다”

(☞ so와 that 사이에 아무 것도 넣지 않을 경우 so that 다음에는 ‘주어＋동사’ 형태의 절을 쓰고, “~하기 위해서”라는 목적 또는 결과의 의미가 됩니다. 참고로 so와 that이 떨어져 있고 그 사이에 형용사나 부사가 나오는 경우에는 “너무 ~해서 그 결과 ~하다”로 해석하면 됩니다.)

You must study the Dojeon so that you engrave the sacred teachings in your minds.

당신은 『도전』을 공부해서 성스러운 가르침을 마음속에 새겨야 한다.

Sit up straight, so that your head and neck are in line with your spine.

머리와 목이 척추와 일직선이 되도록 허리를 펴고 앉으세요.

I woke up early so that I wouldn’t be late.

나는 지각하지 않기 위해서 일찍 일어났다.

3. cannot ~ enough : 아무리 ~해도 지나치지 않다

(☞ cannot/can never ~ enough는 “아무리 ~해도 부족하다”는 뜻의 관용표현이니 기억해 주세요.)

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of offering water.

봉청수의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않습니다.

I can never thank you enough.

감사의 말씀을 이루 다 드릴 길이 없습니다.

I cannot praise her enough.

그녀는 아무리 칭찬해도 지나치지 않아.

4. 주어 + is + that : 주어는 = that절이다

(☞ that절이 주어와 = 관계가 성립하는 주격보어로, “주어는 = that절이다”라는 의미가 되는 구조입니다.)

The most important thing is that every practitioner must share the teachings with at least six people.

가장 중요한 것은 모든 도생들이 적어도 여섯 사람에게 진리를 전수해야 한다는 것입니다.

The most important thing is that we come to meditation with an open attitude.

가장 중요한 것은 열린 자세로 명상에 임하는 것입니다.

The great thing about Taeeulju Mantra meditation is that you can do it almost anywhere.

태을주 수행의 좋은 점은 거의 어느 곳에서나 할 수 있다는 점입니다.

Dialogue 1

A: 증산도대학교는 어떤 학교인지 알고 싶습니다.

B: 입도를 하게 되는 모든 도생은 증산도대학교의 도생입니다. 도생들은 증산도대학교 교육을 통해 진리를 보는 안목을 넓히고 생활 속에 실천할 수 있게 됩니다. 우리는 도전 말씀을 공부하고 태상종도사님, 종도사님의 가르침을 뼈에 새기며 공부해야 합니다. 이것은 오직 증산도대학교를 통해서만 가능해지기 때문에 도생들은 증산도대학교 교육에 참여해야만 합니다.

A: I would like to know what kind of school the Jeung San Do University is.

B: Every practitioner is a student of the Jeung San Do University. Through the Jeung San Do University programs the practitioners broaden their understanding of the teachings and carry out these teachings in their daily lives. We practitioners must study the Dojeon and the words of Taesang Jongdosanim and Jongdosanim so that we engrave the sacred teachings in our minds. This only becomes possible through the Jeung San Do University, so all practitioners must participate in the Jeung San Do University programs.

Dialogue 2

A: 매일 청수를 모시고, 수행과 기도를 하는 것. 그리고 성금을 모시는 것도 너무도 중요하지만 가장 중요한 것은 모든 도생들이 상제님과 태모님의 대도를 최소한 6명에게 전해야 한다는 겁니다.

B: 육임을 말씀하시는 건가요?

A: 네. 이 육임을 짜는 것은 증산도 도생의 기본적 의무입니다. 육임을 짜는 과정에서 진리에 대한 이해가 깊어지고 진정한 천지의 일꾼으로서 성숙해 나갑니다.

A: I cannot emphasize enough the importance of water offerings, praying and meditating everyday, and also making donations, but the most important thing of all is that every practitioner must convey the teachings of Sangjenim and Taemonim to at least six people.

B: Are you talking about the Vanguard of Six?

A: Yes. Forming a vanguard of six is a fundamental duty of a Jeung San Do practitioner. During this process of forming a team, your understanding about the truth deepens, and you mature as a true worker of heaven and earth.
