The Three Stages of Gaebyeok

1. break out : 발발[발생]하다

☞ break out 은 구동사로, 전쟁·질병 등 안 좋은 일이 발생한다고 할 때 사용합니다.

A war unprecedented in its scale will break out.

유례없는 큰 전쟁이 일어납니다.

Unknown diseases of all kinds will break out.

장차 이름 모를 온갖 병이 다 들어온다.

Fire broke out during the night.

밤사이에 화재가 발생했다.

2. outbreak : (전쟁·사고·질병 등의) 발생[발발]

☞ break out이라는 구동사의 순서를 바꾸어 복합명사가 된 경우입니다. 예: come out (결과가 나타나다) → outcome(결과)

come in (들어오다) → income(수입)

The outbreak of war will swiftly be followed by the disease.

전쟁이 발발하고 바로 병이 온다.

At the outbreak of the catastrophic disease, all the world’s arts of medicine will become useless.

병겁이 돌 때는 세상의 모든 의술은 무용지물(無用之物)이 되느니라.

The last natural outbreak of smallpox occurred back in 1949.

자연적으로 시두가 발생한 것은 1949년이 마지막이었다.

3. devastating : 대단히 파괴적인, 엄청난 손상을 가하는

☞ 어떤 장소 등을 “철저히 파괴하다”라는 뜻을 가진 동사 devastate에 ~ing를 붙여 형용사가 되었습니다.

The pangs of the mysterious disease will be devastating.

괴질의 고통은 파괴적일 것이다.

Of all the disasters, the disaster of disease shall be the most devastating.

난은 병란(病亂)이 크니라.

4. ill : (격식) 문제, 해악, 병폐

☞ ill은 주로 “아프다(=sick)”는 형용사로 알고 있지만, “악, 병폐, 불행” 등을 뜻하는 명사로도 사용됩니다.

Through the mysterious disease, all the ills of the past fifty thousand years under the Early Heaven will be cleansed.

병겁을 통해서 선천 5만 년 동안 찌든 묵은 기운이 씻겨 내려갈 것이다.

There seems to be no cure for the country's social ills.

이 사회의 문제를 해결할 방법은 없는 것으로 보인다.

Is religion the sole remedy for all the ills of humanity?

종교가 인류의 병폐를 치유하는 유일한 방법일까?

Dialogue 1

A: 개벽은 실제로 어떤 모습으로 일어나나요?

B: 가을개벽은 3단계에 걸쳐 세상에 닥칩니다. 먼저 전쟁입니다.

유례없는 큰 전쟁이 일어납니다.

A: 먼저라고 하시면 다른 사건들도 있다는 말씀이시군요.

B: 전쟁이 일어나고 바로 질병이 인류를 엄습합니다. 괴질이 퍼져 전쟁은 끝이 납니다. 그런데 그 질병은 지금까지 인류가 경험하지 못한 무서운 괴질怪疾입니다. 어떤 인간의 약으로도 대처할 수 없는 괴질이 세상에 퍼져 나가면서 생명을 말려버립니다. 세 번째 단계에서는 지구가 흔들리는 최후의 대개벽이 터집니다. 지축地軸의 대이동이에요.

A: How will the gaebyeok unfold?

B: The gaebyeok will strike the world in three stages.

First, a war. A war unprecedented in its scale will break out.

A: When you say ‘First’, it must mean that there are some other events as well.

B: The outbreak of war will swiftly be followed by the second stage of gaebyeok: the disease. A mysterious disease that humanity has never seen before will arise and inevitably end the war. And the final stage of gaebyeok will shake the very earth, because it will entail the shift of the earth’s axis.

A: 최후의 경고입니다. 병겁은 파괴적이지만 후천 새 세상을 여는 데 필수적인 과정입니다. 병겁을 통해서 선천 5만 년 동안 찌든 묵은 기운이 씻겨 내려가는 것입니다.

A: Before the catastrophic disease break out, smallpox will strike first, coming as a messenger of the mysterious disease.

B: Are you implying that the outbreak of smallpox in the future is a warning sign for the coming of the mysterious disease?

A: A final warning. Though the pangs of the mysterious disease will be devastating, it is a vital process to build the Later Heaven’s new world. Through the mysterious disease, all the ills of the past fifty thousand years under the Early Heaven will be cleansed.
