Do Spirits Exist?
1. After + 부사절 , 주절 : ~한 후에
After people die, they are born as spirits.
사람이 죽으면 신명으로 다시 태어난다.
After I meditate, I always feel refreshed.
나는 수행한 후에 항상 상쾌한 기분이 든다.
After she eats, she drinks tea.
그녀는 식사 후에 차를 마신다.
2. Just as + 부사절, 주절 : 마치 ~처럼
Just as we interact in the human world, spirits interact with each other.
우리가 인간 세계에서 소통하듯이 신명도 서로 소통한다.
Just as a tailor uses a specific method to cut cloth, Sangjenim worked out a perfect plan for the Later Heaven.
재단사가 그의 공법에 의해 옷을 마름질하듯, 상제님께서 후천을 위한 완벽한 설계를 해 놓으셨다.
Just as the principle of heaven matures in the cosmic autumn, so too do humanity’s cultures mature.
우주의 가을에 천리天理가 성숙해 감에 따라 인류 문화도 또한 성숙되는 것이다.
3. 주어 + associate with those who : ~한 (사람 등)과 어울리다
Spirits associate with those who have similar traits and interests.
신명은 비슷한 특성과 관심 분야를 가진 신명끼리 어울린다.
You should only associate with those who are spiritually minded and not materialistic.
영적인 생각을 갖고 물질주의적이지 않은 사람하고만 사귀어야 한다.
Associate with those who push you to be better.
그대가 더 나은 사람이 되도록 몰아붙이는 사람과 어울려라.
4. depending upon/on ~ : ~에 따라서
Spirits live in different heavens, depending upon their spiritual development and their virtue during their lifetimes on earth.
신명은 지상에서의 공덕과 영적 진화 정도에 따라 각기 다른 하늘에서 살아간다.
Depending upon the degree of a person’s self-cultivation, their spirit may live onward or not.
사람이 닦은 바에 따라서 신명은 계속 살기도 하고 그렇지 않기도 한다.
The characteristics of each culture vary depending upon the soil of the region.
지역의 토양에 따라 각 문화의 성격이 달라진다.
Dialogue 1
A: What happens after we die?
B: After people die, they are born as spirits.
A: Born as spirits? I don’t understand.
B: Taesang Jongdosanim said humans are humans with physical bodies, and spirits are humans without physical bodies. Spirits interact with each other just as we interact in the human world and, further, their actions affect the human world.
A: 우리가 죽으면 어떻게 되나요?
B: 사람이 죽으면 신명으로 다시 태어납니다.
A: 신명으로 태어난다고요? 이해가 잘 안 되는군요.
B: 태상종도사님께서는 사람은 육신이 있는 사람, 신명은 육신이 없는 사람이라고 하셨습니다. 인간 세상과 똑같이 신명들끼리 교류를 갖고 나아가 인간 세상에도 영향을 줍니다.

A: Countless groups and communities exist in the spirit realm as spirits generally associate with those who have similar traits and interests.
B: Then spirits who were Buddhists on earth must be living among other Buddhist spirits, and spirits of Christians live among other Christian spirits!
A: How did you know that? Yes. After people shed their physical bodies upon death, they are born as spirits and begin their lives in different heavens, depending upon their spiritual development and their virtue they have accumulated during their lifetimes on earth.
A: 신명계에서는 일반적으로 비슷한 특성과 관심 분야를 가진 신명들이 서로 모여 삽니다.
B: 정말요? 그렇다면 지상에서 불교 신자였던 이들은 불교인들끼리, 기독교인이었던 이들은 기독교인끼리 모여 살겠군요!
A: 그걸 어떻게 아셨어요? 그렇죠. 왜냐하면 인간이 죽음을 맞이해 육신을 벗은 뒤에는, 지상에서의 공덕과 영적인 발전 정도에 따라 각기 다른 하늘에서 신명의 모습으로 살아가기 때문입니다.
