Revere Your Ancestors like Heaven and Earth
The heavenly bond (천륜은)
between ancestors and descendants (조상과 자손 간의 )
do not end with death. (죽음과 동시에 끊어지지 않는다.)
This bond endures (천륜은 지속된다 )
even after death. (죽음 이후에도 )
Ancestral spirits in the spirit realm (신명계의 조상신들은)
constantly watch over (끊임없이 보살핀다 )
their descendants on earth, (지상의 자손을)
like a mother (엄마가 )
looking after her child. (아이를 돌보듯이 )
Ancestors are (조상은 )
the root of their descendants, (자손의 뿌리이며 )
and descendants are (자손은 )
the fruit of their ancestors. (조상의 열매다. )
And so, if descendants die (따라서 만약 자손이 죽으면 )
during the Autumn Gaebyeok, (가을개벽기에 )
their ancestors in heaven (그 조상도 )
will die as well. (함께 죽을 것이다)
If descendants survive, (자손이 살면)
their ancestors in heaven (천상의 조상도)
will survive. (살아남을 것이다)

Reading Point
1. endure : 오래가다, 지속되다
endure는 동사로, 보통 “견디다, 참다, 인내하다”라는 뜻으로 쓰이지만, “오래가다, 지속되다”라는 격식을 갖춘 표현을 하고 싶을 때도 사용합니다.
예: He can't endure being defeated. (=참다)
그는 지는 것을 못 참는다.
a success that will endure (=지속되다)
오래 지속될 성공
2. like a mother looking after her child : 아이를 돌보는 엄마처럼
like는 ‘좋아하다’라는 의미의 동사로, ‘~와 같은’(= similar to 또는 the same as)의 의미를 가진 전치사로도 쓰입니다.
예: The corrupt will fall and decay like autumn leaves.
악한 자는 가을의 낙엽처럼 떨어져 썩을 것이다.
a mother looking after her child(아이를 보살피는 엄마)에서 looking은 명사 mother의 뒤에서 꾸며 주는 역할을 하는데요, 이때 looking을 현재분사라고 합니다.
예: Look at the man practicing meditation.
명상을 하는 저 남자를 봐.
3. 접속사 since = ~ 때문에
If descendants survive,
자손이 살면(조건절)
their ancestors in heaven will survive.
천상의 조상도 살아남을 것이다
If절이 “만약 ~한다면”이라는 뜻의 조건절로 쓰이는 경우 if절의 시제는 현재가 미래를 대신합니다.
예: If she will come to my house, I will teach her meditation. (X)
→ If she comes to my house, I will teach her meditation. (O)
만일 그녀가 우리 집에 온다면 명상을 가르쳐 줄 거야.
번역
조상과 자손의 관계는 죽음과 동시에 끊어지는 것이 아니다. 천륜 관계는 죽은 다음까지 이어진다. 죽어서 천상 신명계에 살고 있는 조상신은 마치 어린 아이를 돌보는 어머니와 같이 끊임없이 지상의 자손을 보살핀다. 조상은 자손의 뿌리이고, 자손은 조상의 열매이다. 그렇기에, 만약 가을개벽기에 자손이 죽으면 천상의 조상도 함께 죽고 만다. 지상의 자손이 개벽철에 살면 천상의 조상도 함께 산다.
