The three beats of cosmic life: Mugeuk, Taegeuk, and Hwanggeuk

천지의 이치는 삼원 三元 이니 곧 무극 無極 과 태극 太極 과 황극 皇極 이니라. 무극은 도의 본원 本源 이니 십토 十土 요, 태극은 도의 본체로 일수 一水 니라. 황극은 만물을 낳아 기르 는 생장 生長 운동의 본체니 오토 五土 를 체 體 로 삼고 칠화 七火 를 용 用 으로 삼느니라. (도 전 6:1)

“The principle of Heaven and Earth comprises three ultimates: Mugeuk, Taegeuk, and Hwanggeuk. Mugeuk, the primal source of dao, is ‘ten earth’ ( 十土 ). Taegeuk, the basis of dao, is ‘one-water’ ( 一水 ). Hwanggeuk, the driving force of birth and growth in all things, is ‘five-earth’ ( 五土 ) in substance and ‘seven-fire’ ( 七火 ) in function.” (Dojeon 6:1) 

만물의 탄생과 변화는 천지에 가득 찬 우 주생명( 氣 )의 율려 律呂 작용으로 일어납니 다. 그런데 그 우주생명 속에 담겨 있는 창조 와 변화 운동의 원리를 우주정신( 理 )이라 합 니다. 상제님( 三神一體上帝 )은 이 우주의 조 화정신( 三神 )과 하나 되어 천지와 인간 역사 를 다스리시는 대우주의 통치자 하느님이십 니다.

The birth and change of all things arise from the yullyeo function of cosmic life force ( qi ), which is full of Heaven and Earth. The principle of the creation and trans- formation imbedded in the cosmic life energy is called the “cosmic mind” or the “way of the universe” ( li ). Sangjenim, who became one with Samsin , the Holy Spirit of the universe is the ruler of the grand universe, and gov- erns Heaven, Earth, and human history. 

그러면 우주정신은 어떻게 만물을 창조 하고 변화시키는 것일까요? 정역 正易 을 정 립한 김일부 대성사는 무극·태극·황극이라 는 삼극의 변화 논리로 우주정신의 실상을 밝혔습니다.

How does the cosmic mind create and change all things? The Sacred Venerable Gim Il-bu, who established Jeong-yeok : The Book of Right Change , revealed the reality of the cosmic mind based on the logic of the “Three Ultimates”: Mugeuk, Taegeuk, and Hwanggeuk. 

우주는 근원에서 멀어지는 생장의 ‘역 逆 운동’과, 근원으로 수렴하는 성숙의 ‘순 順 운 동’을 반복합니다. 역 운동을 하는 시간대를 ‘선천 先天 ’이라 하고, 순 운동을 하는 시간대 를 ‘후천 後天 ’이라 합니다.

In the universe, the diverging movement of birth and growth and the converging movement of maturity repeat cyclically as the universe diverges from and converges to the origin. The period of this diverging movements is known as “Early Heaven,” while that of the converging movement is known as “Later Heaven.” 

정역은 우주 변화 운동을 천간 天干 지지 地支 와 수상 數象 의 논리로 해명하는데, 선천 에서 후천으로 전환하는 변화의 틀을 개벽 의 이치로 밝히고, 그 변화의 본체를 삼극 논 리로 전하고 있습니다. 일부 대성사는 우주 조화의 근원을 ‘무극 無極 ’, 우주의 만물 창조 의 본체를 ‘태극 太極 ’, 창조·변화를 주재하 여 만물을 성숙으로 이끄는 우주 운동의 본 체를 ‘황극 皇極 ’이라고 하였습니다. 여기서 는 그 기본적인 틀을 간단히 살펴보겠습니 다. (계속)

Jeong-yeok explains the constant change in the move- ments of the universe using the logic of the ten heavenly stems, twelve earthly branches, as well as the symbolic log- ic of numbers. Jeong-yeok uncovers the framework of the transformation from the Early Heaven to Later Heaven through the principle of gaebyeok , and reveals the main body of the changes through the logic of the Three Ultimates. According to the Sacred Venerable Gim ll-bu, “ Mugeuk ” is the origin of the universe’s creation and transformation; “ Taegeuk ” is the substance of all creation in the universe; and “ Hwanggeuk ” is the substance of the universe’s movement, which leads to the maturation of all things by governing creation and change.
