그러면 지금까지 인류가 살아온 선천 세상은 구체적으로 어떠한 원리에 따라 둥글어 왔을까요?

In that case, upon what principle has humanity been living under in our era of the Early Heaven? 

선천은 상극 相克 의 운運 이라.(도전2:17:1)

The Early Heaven is ruled by the destiny of mutual conflict and domination. (Dojeon 2:13:1) 

선천은 상극 相克 의 이법으로 돌아가는 세상입니다. 하늘과 땅과 인간, 그리고 모든 생 명체가 상극 질서 속에서 태어나 살아갑니다.

The Early Heaven exists according to the principle of sanggeuk (mutual conflict and domination). Heaven, earth, humanity and all lives are born under the principle of sanggeuk , and live according to the principle of sanggeuk . 

그럼 상극이란 무엇일까요? 여기서 상극 이란 문자적으로 서로 상 相 , 이길 극 克 으로 서 ‘서로 극한다, 제어한다, 대립한다’는 뜻 입니다. 봄에 새싹이 나오려면 땅을 뚫고 올라와야 하고, 아기가 태어나려면 어머니의 산도 産道 를 찢고 나와야 하는 것, 이것이 상극입니다.

What does sanggeuk mean? Sang implies at least two people. It means “each other”. Geuk means “to restrain”, “to curtail”, and “to fight”. It means to restrict each other, to clash with each other, to struggle against each other. Spring comes and in order to sprout, a seed must win over the earth and come out of the ground. For a child to be born, it must tear out its mother’s placenta and come out of her womb. This is sanggeuk . 

봄여름 철에는 상극 질서에 의해 생 生 과 장 長 이 이루어지는 것입니다. 그러므로 상극은 ‘자연의 창조 원리’라 할 수 있습니다.

In spring and summer, lives are born and grow up ac- cording to the principle of sanggeuk . Sanggeuk is nature’s creative principle.

그런데 증산 상제님께서는 상극을 ‘문명의 발전 원리’로도 말씀하셨습니다. 즉 ‘도전에 대한 응전이 발전의 원동력이 된다’는 역사 학자 토인비(A.Toynbee)의 말처럼, 인류 는 끊임없이 극을 받지만, 그것을 극복하면 서 찬란한 문명을 이루게 되는 것입니다. 상극 질서는 그 근원을 살펴보면 천지 부 모의 몸이 기울어진 데서 비롯되었습니다. 우주의 봄여름에는 대우주 천체가 기울어져 서 돌아갑니다. 생명의 어머니인 지구도 23.5도 기울어져 있습니다. 

Sangjenim has also stated that sanggeuk is ‘the principle behind the development of civilization’. Just like the words of a famous historian, Arnold J. Toynbee, ‘resistance against challenge is the engine of de- velopment’. Humanity continues to face challenges; yet, through the process of overcoming such restraints, hu- manity has developed the civilization we have today. The original cause of the order of sanggeuk is the fact that the body of our parents, heaven and earth, is tilted. During the seasons of cosmic spring and cosmic summer our universe is tilted. Our Mother Earth spins its daily cy- cle being tilted 23.5 degrees. 

천지 부모가 생명을 낳는 방위인 동북 방 향으로 몸을 눕혀서 만물을 쏟아냅니다. 그 때문에 생명을 많이 낳을 수 있지만, 한편으 로 상극이 생겨나는 것입니다. (계속)

Because heaven and earth are tilted, we have four seasons. Because heaven and earth are tilted, we have time itself. Because heaven and earth are tilted, we have birth and creation, life and evolution. Yet, because heaven and earth are tilted, we have sanggeuk . (to be continued)
