Taegeuk: The substance of the universe’s creation 

태극, 공 空 과 물( 水 ): 태극은 혼돈의 우주 바다인 무극의 생명 막이 음양 陰陽 이라는 양 극으로 움직이며 상대성 운동을 하는 자리 입니다. 실질적으로 우주가 만물을 창조하 는 운동은 이 태극 太極 생명에서 시작합니다. 그런데 태극생명은 어떤 외부의 손길에 의 해서가 아니라 무극 속에 내재한 태극성에 의해서 자연적으로 작동됩니다. 무극이 질 서화하여 열린 태극은 만물 창조의 본체입 니다.

Taegeuk, emptiness, and water: Taegeuk is the place where the life membrane of Mugeuk, the cosmic sea of chaos, moves to the opposite poles of yin and yang and where it performs the movement of relativity. In fact, the movement by which the universe creates all things begins with the Taegeuk life force. However, the life force of Taegeuk is conducted by the nature of Taegeuk inherent in Mugeuk, rather than by any other external force. Taegeuk, which was manifested from Mugeuk by organiz- ing and ordering the Self, is the main source of all creation. 

태극의 본체는 ‘공 空 ’이고, 그 상 象(image)은 현실계에 ‘물( 水 )’로 드러납니다.

The main body of Taegeuk is “emptiness” and the sym- bol of Taegeuk is “water” in the phenomenal world.  

무극의 조화 기운이 압축 공약되면, 무극 은 충만한 공 空 의 상태가 됩니다. 이 공 空 자 리는 일견 텅 비어 있는 것으로 생각되지만, 실제로는 우주의 진기 眞氣 (순수 에너지)로 충만한 만물 창조의 본체 자리입니다. 이 공 ( 眞空 )에서 물( 水 )이 창조되면서 우주의 생명 창조 운동이 시작됩니다. 이 물에서 천지 만 물이 나왔고, 현상계의 모든 변화도 결국 물 의 변화 운동입니다. 물의 극단적인 분열의 모습이 바로 ‘불( 火 )’의 변화 작용입니다. 이 처럼 만물을 창조하는 본체인 공을 ‘우주 창 조의 본체’라 하고, 만물 창조 운동의 시작이 자 만물 생성의 뿌리인 물을 우주 창조의 ‘생 명의 본체’라 합니다. 이 물은 곧 태극수로, 상수로는 1로 나타냅니다. 그런데 물의 뿌리 가 진공이므로 만물의 본질과 실상(참모습) 은 바로 공인 것입니다. When its qi of creation-transformation is compressed, Mugeuk enters a state of emptiness. Although this void space is thought to be empty at first, in reality, it is filled with genuine or pure energy of the universe. After water was created in this emptiness, the creative movement of life in the universe began. Everything in Heaven and Earth emerged from this water. All changes in the phenomenal world are ultimately the movements of water. The aspect of water’s extreme division is the changing feature of “fire.” This emptiness ? the foundation that creates all things ? is called the substance of universe’s creation. As the beginning of all creative movement and root of all cre- ation, water is the substance of life in the universe’s creation. This water is known as “Taegeuk water,” and nu- merically as “one.” However, as the root of water is true emptiness, the essence and reality of all things is emptiness. (to be continued)
