우주의 가을이 오고 있다 The Cosmic Autumn Approaches

The universe is filled with countless living things. And this earth which is a speck of dust compared to the universe ? is also covered with living creatures. In terms of people alone, there are over seven billion of us populating this earth. Countless living organisms occupy the oceans as well. How are all these creatures born and how do they live? According to Jeung-san Sangjenim, the fundamental principle of change is defined as birth, growth, harvest, and rest.

내가 천지를 주재하여 다스리되 생장염장 生長斂藏 의 이치를 쓰나니 이것을 일러 무위 이화 無爲以化 라 하느니라. (도전 4:58:4)

모든 생명은 생장염장 법칙으로 태어나고 변화해 갑니다. 생장염장이란 ‘낳고, 기르 고, 거두고, 휴식한다’는 뜻입니다. 이것은 참으로 간단한 원리이지만, 천지 안에 존재 하는 만사 만물에 적용되는 보편의 법칙입 니다. 상제님께서 이렇게 대자연의 변화 섭 리를 밝혀 주시기 전까지 어떤 과학자, 철학 자, 성자도 이 법칙을 알지 못했습니다. 

All living things are born and live in accordance with the principle of birth, growth, harvest, and rest. To be born, grow, be harvested, and come to rest is indeed a simple principle, yet this principle applies to all things in the universe. Before Sangjenim, nobody ? no scientist, no philosopher, no saint ? could spell it out in such a simple and clear manner.

생장염장이란 구체적으로 무엇일까요? 생 生 은 우주 변화의 맨 처음 단계로서, 천지 가 인간과 만유 생명을 낳는 봄철의 변화입 니다. 생의 다음 단계가 장 長 입니다. 장은 자 연계가 됐든, 인간 세계가 됐든, 만물이 양적 으로 한껏 성장하는 여름철의 변화입니다. 이렇게 태어나 성장한 것을 셋째 염 斂 의 단 계, 가을철에 가서는 거두어들입니다. 그리 고 마지막 단계가 겨울철의 변화인 장 藏 입니 다. 추수한 생명을 저장하는 것입니다.

What are birth, growth, harvest, and rest? Birth is the beginning stage of cosmic transformation. It is the change that occurs in the spring time when heaven and earth give birth to humanity and all things. The next stage after birth is the growth stage. During the stage of growth, which occurs in summer, all things ? in nature and in the human world ? expand in quantity. In the ongoing process, all things that are born and grow are harvested in the third stage, in autumn. And then in the last stage, in winter, all life comes to rest. This is the stage in which the life force that was harvested in autumn is stored.

그런데 상제님께서는 또 우주가 만물을 낳고, 기르고, 거두고, 폐장하여 쉬는 이 네 마디 변화는 무위이화 無爲以化 로 이루어진다고 하십니다. 우주는 상제님께서 주재하시는 자연 섭리에 따라 저절로 변화하는 것이지 창조주의 작위作爲 에 의해 운행되는 것이 아니라는 말씀입니다. 우주는 누군가의 창조물이 아니며, 살아있고, 만물을 낳고 기르고 수확하고 휴식하는 자연의 과정입니다. 영국의 철학자 알프레드 화이트헤드의 말처럼 “신은 영원한 되어감(becoming)의 과정”인 것입니다.

Sangjenim also stated that these four stages of change ? the universe giving birth, raising, harvesting, and bringing to rest life ? come about through ‘the way of change through non-action.’ Governed by Sangjenim, the universe changes in accordance with the process of nature’s change. The universe does not operate in accordance with the manipulation of a creator god. The universe is not an entity that was created ? it is a living, birthing, growing, harvesting, and resting process of nature. As the English philosopher Alfred N. Whitehead argues, “God is a perpetual process of ‘Becoming’ in cycle.”
