생장염장의 법칙 

This process of birth, growth, harvest, and rest  

이 생장염장이라는 법칙은 한 그루 나무가 사계절에 따라 변화하는 모습에서 쉽게 찾 아 볼 수 있습니다. 봄이 되면 땅 속에서 물기 가 쭉쭉 뻗어 올라오면서, 새싹이 터져 나오려고 나무껍질이 불룩불룩합니다.

This process of birth, growth, harvest, and rest can be easily seen if we examine a tree changing throughout the four seasons. In the spring, water rises from the ground; and in order to sprout buds, the stems and branches burst out with life. 

거기에 봄비가 한 번 내리면, 불과 며칠 사이에 온 산천의 나뭇가지에서 이파리가 다 피어납니다[ 生 ]. 그러다 여름이 되면 그 잎들이 자라서 하늘을 뒤덮습니다[ 長 ]. 그런데 그 상태가 영원히 지속되는 게 아닙니다. 불과 몇 달 후면 열매가 여물면서[ 斂 ] 모든 잎 이 땅으로 떨어집니다. 그리고 겨울이 되면 나무는 다음 봄을 기다리며 긴 휴식에 들어 갑니다[ 藏 ].

Once the spring rain comes, the tree erupts with leaves within days. When summer comes, the leaves grow and cover the tree. Yet, this does not last forever, for in a couple of months, the tree bears fruit and all its leaves fall to the ground. Winter comes and the tree enters a period of rest, waiting for the next spring.

사람이 살아가는 과정도 생장염장입니다. 태어나서 스물 대여섯 살 정도까지는 성장 판이 열려서, 활발한 성장 호르몬 작용으로 뼈가 굵어지고 키가 자랍니다. 하지만 청년기가 지나면 성장판이 닫혀서 더 이상 크지를 않습니다. 염장의 과정 즉 장년기, 노년기로 넘어가는 것입니다.

We humans also live in accordance with the principle of birth, growth, harvest, and rest. We are born, and until we are in our twenties, our growth hormones make our bones thicken and make us grow taller. However, beyond our youth stage, our growth hormones shut down and we no longer grow. We enter the stage of harvest and rest. We enter the stage of maturity and old age. 

천지 만물의 유형 세계가 됐든, 인간의 마음 같은 무형세계가 됐든, 대우주의 극대 세계가 됐든, 소립자의 극미세계가 됐든, 생장 염장으로 변화해 갑니다. 우주의 변화 이법에 대한 가장 간단명료하고도 결론적인 해답이 생장염장인 것입니다. 

Whether in the material world or the immaterial world such as the human mind, whether something is extremely large like the universe or small like an atom, everything undergoes transformation in accordance with the principle of birth, growth, harvest, and rest. The most precise and conclusive explanation of the process of change in the universe is the process of birth, growth, harvest, and rest.
