When Was Christmas First Celebrated?
On December 25, we celebrate the date of Christ’s birth. But no one knows when Christ was really born.
12월 25일에 우리는 그리스도의 탄생을 기념한다. 그러나 그리스도가 실제로 탄생한 날은 아무도 모른다.
When the church decided to mark Christ’s birth with a celebration, it chose December 25 as the date because it was already a holiday in most places in Europe – a holiday called the &winter solstice&.
교회에서 그리스도의 탄생일을 기념하기로 결정하면서 12월 25일을 선택한 것은, 이날이 이미 유럽 대부분의 지역에서 ‘동지’라고 불리는 공휴일이었기 때문이다.
Since the winter solstice marked the shortest day of the year, people held celebrations because after that, the days would begin to grow longer and longer until spring arrived.
동지는 일 년 중 낮이 가장 짧은 날인데, 이날 후로 봄이 올 때까지 낮이 점점 길어지기 때문에 사람들이 이날을 기념했던 것이다.
The ancient Romans celebrated a feast called &Saturnalia& around the day of the winter solstice, and exchanged gifts on the holiday.
고대 로마인들은 동지에 즈음하여 ‘새터네일리어’라는 농신제農神祭를 지내며 선물을 주고받았다.
It wasn’t until the year 440 that December 25 became the official date on Christmas. Christmas no longer falls on the winter solstice because of changes that have been made in the calendar. Now the solstice usually falls around December 22.
12월 25일이 공식 크리스마스로 지정된 것은 서기 440년에 와서이다. 역법의 변경으로 크리스마스는 더 이상 동지에 겹치지 않는다. 지금은 동짓날이 대부분 12월 22일경이다.
