킹덤은 김은희씨가 쓴 웹 코믹 ‘신들의 왕 국’에서 발췌한 내용을 한국의 사극에 좀비 공포물을 엮어서 하나의 설득력 있는 스토 리 라인으로 구성한 드라마입니다. 이 시리 즈물은 2019년에 처음 방영되었을 때 뉴스 의 헤드라인에 올랐으며, 넷플렉스에서 큰 환호를 받아 모든 사람들이 이어질 시즌 2를 기대하게 했습니다.

‘Kingdom’ is a series adapted from the webcomic Kingdom of the Gods written by Kim Eun Hee, that combined sageuk and horror into one compelling storyline. The series made headlines when it was first released in 2019 and created such a buzz in Netflix that made everyone look forward to Season 2. 

이번 시즌엔 한낮에도 깨어서 달리는 좀비 들의 변화된 행동으로 시작되었습니다. 첫 번째 시즌과 마찬가지로, 이번 시즌도 액션 장면들로 가득한 반면, 권력에 굶주린 인간 이 더 많은 권력을 얻고 유지하기 위해 어떻 게 죽은 왕을 부활시키는 어리석은 행동을 하는지에 관한 이야기를 훌륭하게 보여줍니다. 한편, 이번 시즌은 주인공이 마침내 국가를 파멸시키는 역병을 막기 위하여 자신의 힘을 되찾는 조치들을 취하며, 타인을 위한 이타적인 성장의 이야기를 보여주었습니다. 

The Season started with the realization of the changed behavior of the undead who can now run and stay awake at daylight. Like the first season, this season is action-packed while brilliantly revealing the story of how the power-hungry can have the folly of resurrecting royalty just to keep and gain more power. On the other hand, it showed the story of selflessness and growth, as the main protagonist finally took action to regain power in order to stop the plague that was tearing up his nation apart. 

이 드라마가 더욱 흥미로운 것은 현재 세계 상황을 빗대어 은유한 것처럼 보이는 이 시리즈의 섬뜩한 타이밍입니다. 비록 유혈과 음모의 정치가 없다고 할지라도, 킹덤은 좀비 무리와 싸울 준비가 되어 있었을까요? 그와 마찬가지로, 이 세상은 과연 수많은 시 체들을 남기며 들불처럼 번져가는 질병에 대 처할 준비가 되어 있나요? 아니면 우리는 단 순히 그 가능성들을 부인하고 있는가요? 코 로나 바이러스는 사람들을 좀비로 만들지 않 지만, 이 바이러스는 킹덤 속의 좀비가 다음 희생자를 찾아 움직이는 것처럼 빠르게 퍼져 나갑니다. 여기엔 명백한 은유가 있습니다.

What’s more intriguing is the eerie timing of this series, as it seems to be a metaphor for the current world situation. Sans the gore and politics, was the kingdom ready to battle hordes of the undead? Likewise, is the world prepared enough for a disease that spreads like wildfire, leaving corpses in its trail? Or are we in denial of the possibilities? Covid-19 doesn’t turn people into zombies, but it unfurls as fast as the undead in Kingdom bites their next victim. There’s your obvious metaphor.

당신이 현재 세상의 상황에 대해 염려하며, 앞으로 다가올 날들을 생각하고 있다면, 이 시리즈물은 반드시 시청해야 할 드라마 입니다. 킹덤은 자연에 반하는 단 한 번의 행동으로도 어떻게 국가를 무너뜨릴 수 있는 재앙이 일어날 수 있는지를 분명히 보여주었습니다. 질병은 항상 문명의 진화에 큰 역할을 해왔습니다. 사회도 자연으로부터 기원하므로, ‘자연선택의 법칙’을 적용하는 자연의 냉혹한 법칙을 결코 벗어날 수 없습니 다. 그러나 현재 상황에서 이 다윈의 이론만 으로는 생존이 보장되지는 않습니다. 우리는 우리들 자신에 의존할 뿐만 아니라, 우리 를 인도하고 보호하는 신명들에게 도움을 구해야 합니다. 육체적, 정신적, 영적인 힘이 구원의 열쇠가 될 수 있습니다.

This series is a must-watch if you want to ponder on the current situation of the world and are thinking of the days ahead. Kingdom clearly showcased how a single act against nature can bring about a disaster that can level a nation. Disease has always played a big part in the evolution of civilizations. Originating from nature, societies can never escape its deadly way of applying the law of natural selection. However, with the current situation, this Darwinian theory is not enough to survive. We should not only rely on ourselves but also seek help from the spirits that guide and guard us. Physical, mental, and spiritual strength can be our ticket to salvation.
