밸런타인데이의 유래

밸런타인데이는 3세기에 기독교를 탄압했던 로마 황제 클라우디우스 2세와 기독교의 순교자 발렌티누스Valentinus에서 유래한다.

발렌티누스는 결혼이 금지된 로마 병사의 주례를 선 혐의로 구금당했다. 발렌티누스의 생애 마지막 주에 놀랄 만한 일이 일어났다. 간수는 발렌티누스가 학식 있는 사람인 것을 알고 자신의 딸인 쥴리아를 가르쳐 달라고 했다. 쥴리아는 예쁘고 영리한 소녀였지만 태어날 때부터 앞을 보지 못했다. 발렌티누스는 쥴리아에게 로마의 역사를 읽어 주었고 자연의 세계를 설명해 주었다. 수학도 가르쳤다. 신에 관한 이야기도 해 주었다. 쥴리아는 발렌티누스의 눈을 통하여 세계를 보았다. 그의 지혜를 믿었다. 그의 고요한 힘 속에서 마음의 평화를 찾았다.

“발렌티누스 신부님, 하느님이 정말로 우리의 기도를 듣고 있나요?”

어느 날 쥴리아가 물었다. “그렇단다, 얘야. 하느님은 한 사람, 한 사람의 기도를 듣고 계시지.”

“매일 아침저녁으로 제가 무슨 기도를 하는지 아세요? 제가 볼 수 있게 해 달라고 기도해요. 신부님이 말씀해 주신 모든 것들을 너무나 보고 싶어요.” “우리가 하느님을 믿기만 한다면 하느님은 우리를 위해서 가장 좋은 것을 해 주신단다.” 발렌티누스가 말했다. “오, 발렌티누스 신부님, 저는 정말로 믿어요! 믿는다구요!”

그녀는 무릎을 꿇고 발렌티누스의 손을 잡았다. 그들은 조용히 앉아서 함께 기도했다. 갑자기 감방으로 한 줄기 빛이 찬란하게 비쳤다. 환하게 빛나는 밝은 얼굴로 쥴리아는 외쳤다. “신부님, 볼 수 있어요! 제가 볼 수 있어요!” “하느님 감사합니다!” 발렌티누스는 무릎을 꿇고 기도했다.

처형되기 전에 발렌티누스는 쥴리아에게 “당신의 밸런타인으로부터.” 라고 서명한 작별의 편지를 썼다. 207년 2월 14일, 그의 형이 집행되었다.

쥴리아는 그의 묘지 근처에 분홍색 꽃이 피는 아몬드 나무 한 그루를 심었다. 오늘날 아몬드 나무는 영원한 사랑과 우정의 상징으로 남아 있다. 해마다 2월 14일 밸런타인데이가 되면 전 세계적으로 애정과 사랑과 헌신의 메시지를 교환한다.

The story of Valentine's Day begins in the third century with an oppressive Roman emperor, Claudius II and a Christian Martyr, Valentinus. Valentinus was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry.

During the last weeks of Valentinus's life a remarkable thing happened. Seeing that he was a man of learning, the jailer asked whether his daughter, Julia, might be brought to Valentinus for lessons. She had been blind since birth. Julia was a pretty young girl with a quick mind. Valentinus read stories of Rome's history to her. He described the world of nature to her. He taught her arithmetic and told her about God. She saw the world through his eyes, trusted his wisdom, and found comfort in his quiet strength.

“Valentinus, does God really hear our prayers?” Julia asked one day.

“Yes, my child, He hears each one.” “Do you know what I pray for every morning and every night? I pray that I might see. I want so much to see everything you've told me about!” “God does what is best for us if we will only believe in Him.” Valentinus said.

“Oh, Valentinus, I do believe! I do!” She knelt and grasped his hand.

They sat quietly together, each praying. Suddenly there was a brilliant light in the prison cell. Radiant, Julia screamed, “Valentinus, I can see! I can see!” “Praise be to God!” Valentinus exclaimed, and he knelt in prayer. Before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell.

His sentence was carried out on February 14, 270 A.D. It is said that Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship. On each February 14, Saint Valentine's Day, messages of affection, love, and devotion are exchanged around the world.
