추수감사절

The fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a national holiday, so most people don’t go to work. People get together with their families and friends to give thanks for the good things in their lives. Many people travel by plane, train, bus, or car to be with their relatives. More people travel for Thanksgiving than for any other holiday.

11월 넷째 목요일은 추수감사절이다. 추수감사절은 국경일이기 때문에 대부분의 사람들은 출근하지 않는다. 사람들은 가족, 친구들과 함께 만나서 인생의 멋진 것들에 대해 고마움을 전한다. 많은 사람들은 친지들을 만나기 위해 비행기, 기차, 버스 혹은 승용차로 여행을 한다. 추수감사절에는 다른 어떤 휴일보다 더 많은 사람들이 여행한다.

On Thanksgiving Day, families come together for a special dinner. People are going to eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberries. They will have pumpkin pie for dessert. After dinner, the family will relax and talk. Some of them will watch a football game on TV.

추수감사절이 되면 특별한 저녁 식사를 위해 가족들이 함께 모여 칠면조, 스터핑, 으깬 감자, 크랜베리 등을 먹는다. 후식으로는 호박 파이를 먹는다. 가족들은 저녁을 먹은 후에 느긋한 마음으로 이야기를 나눈다. 어떤 사람들은 텔레비전으로 축구를 시청한다.

Thanksgiving started about 400 years ago with the Pilgrims. In the fall of 1620, one hundred Pilgrims came to the United States from England. They came on a boat, the &Mayflower.& Half of the people came for religious freedom. All came for new lives.

추수감사절은 약 400년 전에 순례자들과 함께 시작되었다. 1620년 가을에 100명의 순례자들이 영국에서 미국으로 왔다. 이 사람들은 메이플라워호를 타고 왔다. 그 중에 절반은 종교의 자유를 찾아서 왔다. 모두가 새로운 삶을 위해서 왔다.

In the first winter, the Pilgrims were hungry, sick, and cold. Many people died. Then the Native Americans, the Indians, helped the Pilgrims. They taught the Pilgrims to plant corn and build houses. In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims and the Indians had the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims wanted to give thanks for their new land. They also wanted to thank the Indians for their help.

첫해 겨울에 순례자들은 굶주리고 병들고 추웠다. 많은 사람들이 사망했다. 그때 아메리카 원주민인 인디언이 순례자들을 도와주었다. 인디언들은 순례자들에게 옥수수 심는 법과 집 짓기를 가르쳐 주었다. 1621년 가을에 순례자들과 인디언들은 첫 번째 추수감사절을 지냈다. 순례자들은 그들의 새로운 땅에 감사드리기를 원했다. 또한 인디언들의 도움에도 감사하고 싶어 했다.

The first Thanksgiving was three days long. But in the years after the first Thanksgiving, there were many problems between the newcomers and the Indians. The newcomers took land from the Indians. They killed Indians and destroyed the Native American way of life. Today many Americans feel ashamed about this. On these days, Americans honor Native Americans and remember the peace and friendship of the first Thanksgiving.

첫 번째 추수감사절은 3일이었다. 하지만 첫 번째 추수감사절 이후부터 여러 해 동안 인디언과 새로 온 사람들 사이에 많은 문제가 있었다. 새로 온 사람들은 인디언들의 땅을 빼앗았다. 인디언들을 살해했고 아메리카 원주민의 생활 방식을 파괴했다. 오늘날 많은 미국인들은 이 사실을 유감으로 생각한다. 요즘에는 미국인들이 아메리카 원주민들을 존경하고 첫 번째 추수감사절의 평화와 우정을 기억하고 있다.
