Is there Growth in Conflict?

“To observe people in conflict is a necessary part of a child’s education. It helps him to understand and accept his own occasional hostilities and to realize that differing opinions need not imply an absence of love.” -Milton R. Sapirstein-
Every day, we hear stories about conflict all around us. Stories of conflict can be found in the newspaper, on television, even from the internet. We always tend to be surprised and appalled by these stories. We all come across a resistance of some sort in our daily lives. Whether it’s big or small, it’s a part of our nature. In a person’s life, one likely gets into a disagreement of some sort with another person. We also get into conflict with nature, with our environment, and sometimes ourselves. We see conflict as a common thing, and yet we often wonder why there’s so much conflict in the world.
We define conflict as the “competitive or opposing action of incompatibles: antagonistic state or action” in the dictionary. That is one facet of the coin. Like yin and yang, conflict often presents two sides. It often shows negative while bringing forth the positive. Giving birth to further growth, just like a mother’s birthing pain, is the process of conflict.
That is why, among the stories of conflict, we also hear stories of triumph, stories of winning and overcoming conflict. By overcoming conflict, an individual survives. By defeating resistance, one can experience growth. Even the history of humanity attests to this growing process. Many of the world’s greatest organizations were born from the ashes of conflict. All the lessons learned from the conflicts were integrated into the development of our current civilization. Imagine a little kid, learning to ride a bike for the first time. The kid falls, cries, and stands up. Then the kid tries to ride the bike again, this time going farther than where he was before. With the same logic, humanity overcomes conflict, rising stronger than before, above any obstacles we face, as individuals, as a family, as a society. We carry our lessons and we move along. Like the rhythm of the universe, we progress, growing and learning with every encounter. We overcome conflict and obstacles, just as the universe progress with its own cycle. So we can choose not to fret. Humanity should not resist conflict for growth since the universe itself grows and evolves through it. As human beings, we are challenged to understand this cycle and overcome what we see as obstacles to see our potential for strength and brightness.

"If a preeminent blessing is intended for you, but you do not surmount its associated trials, the blessing shall seek another." -JSD Dojeon-
Like the flip of a coin, we can see both sides of conflict and resistance. We can choose to see growth behind it or the bad side it shows. We can choose to accept it as change, which is after all, inevitable.
