“깨달음을 위해서는 스승이 필요합니까?” 하고 피곳 부인이 제일 먼저 질문했다. 깨달음은 가르침, 강설 講說 , 명상 등의 결 과라기보다는 스승의 은총의 결과입니다. 가르침 등은 2차적인 보조 수단에 불과하지 만, 은총은 1차적이고 본질적인 원인입니 다.

“Is a Master necessary for realisation?” Mrs. Piggot asked first. The realisation is the result of the Master’s grace more than teachings, lectures, meditation, etc. They are only secondary aids, whereas the former is the primary and the essential cause.

만일 염송, 명상, 헌신 등을 한다면, 그저 약간의 호흡 제어만 해도 마음을 제어하는 데는 충분합니다. 마음은 말 타는 사람이고 호흡은 말입니다. 조식은 말을 제어하는 고 삐입니다. 이 고삐를 제어하면 마음도 제어 됩니다.

If engaged in japa, dhyana, bhakti, etc., just a little con- trol of breath will suffice to control the mind. The mind is the rider and the breath the horse. Pranayama is a check on the horse. By that check the rider is checked. 

조식은 그저 약간만 해도 됩니다. 호흡을 지켜보는 것도 조식의 한 방법입니다. 다른 활동으로 분산되던 마음이 호흡을 지켜보는 데 몰두합니다. 그러면 호흡이 제어되고, 그 러면 다시 마음이 제어됩니다. 만일 그렇게 할 수 없다면 날숨과 들숨 수련을 할 필요가 없습니다. 숨은 염송, 명상 등을 하는 동안에 도 잠시 멈추는데, 그럴 때도 좋은 결과가 나 옵니다.

Pranayama may be done just a little. To watch the breath is one way of doing it. The mind abstracted from other activities is engaged in watching the breath. That controls the breath; and in its turn the mind is controlled. If unable to do so, rechaka and puraka need not be practised. Breath may be retained a short while in japa, dhyana, etc. Then, too, good results will follow.
